Canadian Pharmaceutical Company Paves Their Foundation for Digital Transformation

The pharmaceutical sector is in a state of transformation. Data is advancing the way medications are created and distributed and optimizing operations. With Digital Transformation at the center this revolution, pharmaceutical companies have the opportunity differentiate themselves, leading their market with innovative products and reduced costs all the while providing a better experience and product for physicians and their patients.

The Situation

In 2019, a Canadian pharmaceutical company of 8,000+ employees that distributes affordable and innovative products 100 countries, worldwide, had a SQL 2008 server reaching end of support. It held multiple disparate, ungoverned systems, which lead to decreased operational efficiency with manual resource time that’s required to prep for business intelligence, untrusted data with multiple, conflicting data sources, and lost opportunity for accurate, strategic decision making. The approaching deadline to migrate their legacy platform posed a unique opportunity to consider a system that would future-proof their architecture and lay the foundation for their future Digital Transformation.

They knew to truly capitalize on their data, they would need a partner with the industry knowledge and expertise required to implement a robust enterprise data warehouse, containing a single source of accurate data throughout their organization. As well as the expertise to implement a robust governance program to ensure accurate, trusted, and timely data they would need to leverage their information in advanced analytics.

Adastra engaged at our client to conduct an assessment on their readiness to move to the cloud. By providing consultative meetings with stakeholders and ensuring that we showcased our strategic thought leadership in terms of their enterprise data strategy, we established ourselves as a trusted advisor and executed a pilot workload to prove the seamlessness of the Cloud. We additionally establishing a roadmap to set the foundation for their Digital Transformation with an Azure Centered modern data warehouse, built around Azure Synapse for Self-Service BI and Data Science.

Without a doubt our client was confident in moving to the Cloud with clear opportunities for disaster recovery, scale, cost savings, and much more.

Adastra refactored data from SAP ECC, SAP BW, SQL Server Access DB, and Excel from across their organization, totalling 130 GB into an enterprise data warehouse build on Azure Synapse to drive growth and strengthen their foundations for increased profitability.  In parallel we deployed an Enterprise Data Governance Centre of Excellence and an MDM framework to mature the accountability and detail around data stewardship and ensure long term data accuracy and access across the organization.

Adastra’s solution developed a scalable and secure Cloud-based platform that met the current and future needs for our client’s analytics and reporting needs. By creating a single source of information, we eliminated data silos which limited visibility into enterprise performance and allowed for more efficient and accurate metrics production. Their enterprise platform allowed them to handle large volumes of data and retrieve data for reporting needs, improving performance and shifting from a reactive to predictive reporting and analytics, providing critical capabilities to align with their strategic priorities.

Our client is now easily able to track KPI’s through reports and dashboarding to assess their portfolio at skew level to determine which to focus on which products are driving the business. Adastra continues to work in scaling their platform and working towards achieving their Digital Transformation roadmap.
